Last weekend was Vikingdagen Den Oever! For the first time this year we would set up camp. This time with a lot of improvements compared to two years ago. We now have much better clothing, a tarp for shade, more stuff for the outdoor kitchen and many more things. We even had to make some choices when packing. Next event we might need a little trailer.

Friday evening we set off to Den oever; we got there around eight in the evening. We said our hello's and started setting up. After this I made some tea and then got dressed and went out for some more chats.

The next morning we woke up rather early, the night was a bit broken because of car lights shining into our tent. People also really liked to honk at the encampment until it really started to be irritating. We got dressed made some tea and ate some leftovers from the day before. After that we checked at the museum and then it was time for visitors. I had put down all my wares and put out a game of alquerque. I was a nice and sunny day with some shade in the afternoon. We spent the day playing games with visitors, I sold some candles and talked about my set up and clothes.

For lunch we made some flatbreads and ate them with some butter. Then it was time to start with the meal I would present for the Viking food contest! I tried to recreate the stew we had at Prehistorisch dorp. While waiting for it to cook I made some new clay candles, this time with the black clay. food contest there were six contestants with a lot of different meals, there was a kale and apple stew, pulled meat with apple salad, meat stewed in mead and then barley and veggies stewed in the broth, all looked amazing. We got a taste of the latter and it was delicious! Then we visited the camp of the Reizende Noorderlingen. There we also got to taste a pigeon stew. So much good food!

I also went to the archery range and did some practicing and chatted with people there. Then it was time for story telling at the Bloodaxes. Always a joy to join them.

Then day three came to be. During the night we had some rain, which would have been relaxing if I would not have worried about the tarp flying away. I did hear some other people fastening ropes and such. But, everything was fine. We started the day with some changes in layout, so my market spot was more visible and people would not go into the tent that easily. After that we had some breakfast in the museum and went to the tent again for opening time. Just like Saturday some friends came over and we chatted and walked around the field. This day was full on sunny, instead of cloudy at the end of the day. This resulted in us getting less and les shade. I really don't do well in the heat so that was a bit less fun. The last half hour was the longest before we could pack up. But! At the end of the day I sold all of my candles, so that was real cool!

So, there's that: a weekend full of fire making, chatting about clothing, sun and most of all, amazing people. Sadly I did not make a ton of photo's but I hope you get a good feeling about the event this way too.

Many thanks to the lovely volunteers from Vikingen Informatie Centrum making the event possible and all the reenactors present! Hopefully I can be there again next year!
